Quality and transparency trade-offs

The quality slider defaults to 92% here, higher than the 80% default on the general Image Compressor, because PNGs are often screenshots, UI graphics or logos with flat colors and sharp edges — the kind of image where JPG compression artifacts show up fastest. Before the conversion draws your image, the canvas is filled with solid white, so any transparent areas in the PNG are permanently replaced with white rather than left blank or turned black. If the image needs to sit on a different colored background, flatten it against that color in an image editor first, since a JPG has no way to store transparency at all.

Tips for smaller JPGs

For screenshots with small text, keep quality at 90% or above — text edges show compression fuzz sooner than photos do.
If your PNG has transparency and needs to keep it, this isn't the right tool — use WebP Converter and choose WebP or PNG as the output instead.
JPG output is almost always smaller than the source PNG for photographic content, but can occasionally be similar in size for very simple, low-color graphics.
Batches share one quality setting; if some images need higher quality than others, convert them in separate batches.

Is PNG to JPG safe?
