It's useful for checking who created a file, when it was last modified, or whether sensitive metadata needs to be removed before sharing.

Example: checking a file before you trust it

Say you've been sent a "final" contract PDF and want a quick gut-check before signing it. Open it in PDF Metadata Viewer and look at three fields together: Producer (the software that actually generated the file), Creation Date and Modification Date. If the Producer says a word processor but you were told the file was scanned, or the Modification Date is hours after the date you were told it was finalized, that's worth asking about before you sign.

Things to know

Dates come from the PDF's internal D:YYYYMMDDHHmmss timestamp format. If a date field shows "Not specified," the PDF simply never had that field set — it isn't a reading error.
A missing Title, Author, Subject or Keywords field is normal — these are optional, and many PDF generators leave them empty by default.
This tool only reads metadata; it never writes anything back to your file. To change these fields, use PDF Metadata Editor.
If your PDF is password-protected, it may not open in the browser at all — remove the password with Unlock PDF first.

Yes. It reads your file's document properties entirely in your browser, so it never reaches our servers — which matters since fields like Author or Producer can carry personal or company details. No account is required, and nothing is stored once you close the tab.

Why are some fields blank?

Not every PDF has every metadata field filled in. Fields like Title, Author or Keywords are optional and depend on how the PDF was created.

Can I edit this metadata?

This tool only displays metadata. Use PDF Metadata Editor to change the title, author, subject or keywords.

Does this work with password-protected PDFs?

Encrypted PDFs may not be readable in the browser. If your file is password-protected, remove the password first.
